WMS softball swings for the fences

After a late start, Watertown Middle School’s softball team had an amazing season!

Coach Grippo and Coach Kaitlin did a great job with the girls, who were eighth-graders Alexis, Hanna, Jenna, Arora, Kaitlin, Jillian, Lauren, and Eva; seventh-graders Cali, Caroline, Destiny, Stella, Catherine, Ayah, Eva, and Didar; and sixth-graders Shayla and Amelia.

The team lost a month of practice because it did not have a coach. The team finally got one they week before April vacation. During break, the girls that could come practiced Monday through Thursday from 2-4 p.m.

The girls’ first game was the following Tuesday at their Lowell School home field against Newton Day. Unfortunately the girls lost, but they continued on with the season and they got their first win, 11-2, at  Newton Oak Hill. They also beat this team again, this time at home, 11-9.

Practices were Mondays and Wednesdays, and games were on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For away games, the team would take the bus along with the baseball team. The games were seven innings long. They usually didn’t start until 4 p.m, and went until 5:30.

The season ended and the eighth-graders will move onto high school, while the seventh-graders will take over next year’s team.
