Chorus classes at WMS make every day — and beat — count
The Watertown Middle School chorus is hard at work getting those lovely songs known by heart!
All students from any grade are welcome to join! Sixth-graders have class separately from the the seventh- and eighth-graders.
At the beginning of class, students put down their stuff, grab their folders (which carry their music sheets), go to their section of the bleachers, and stand while waiting for Ms. Casey to conduct class.
When class has finally started, the students work on breath control, in other words they have to make the sound, “Shhhhh,” while Ms. Casey counts to either 16, 20, 24, 28, 30, or 32 beats. The goal for sixth-graders is 24 beats, while seventh- and eighth-graders have to reach to 32 beats.
Every once and a while, students are quizzed with a partner by Ms. Casey on the most recent beat practiced.
After breath control, the class moves on to vocal warmups, when they work on humming, and sounding out the different vowels to get their voice warmed up to sing.
From then on, the students get out their music and practice their songs until they can sing them perfectly.
All classes worked hard to get ready for the winter concert Dec. 10, working every class to make sure that they sing perfectly for WMS.
Chorus is a wonderful, musical-filled class that has fun sometimes, but still needs hard work!
