This year the Watertown Middle School girls’ field hockey team came out strong with a mixture of sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders. The team played 13 games against many different towns and finished with a 6-2-5 record.

“We all played together as a team. We were all very close and everyone got along with everyone,”  said Mary Breen, an eighth-grader who was on the team three years.

Sarah Gallant, an eighth-grader who just started playing field hockey this year, had a good experience.

“My first year playing field hockey was awesome!” she said. “We worked hard throughout the season, we clicked as a team, and always had each others’ back on a play.”

Leah Zaino led the coaches.

“They were great. They helped you so much and always had players out for the same amount of time, no matter how good you were,” said Lauren Kelly. “They were more like your friend then your coach — until they made you run 10 laps at practice.”

Some of the players will try out for the high school team next year.

“Yes I am excited to move on to the high school,” said Breen. “I will miss the middle school. I had a lot of fun this year and the past years.”

“I really liked playing field hockey,” Gallant said. “I hope I will be able to continue to play it when I get up to the high school.”

Said Kelly, “This year was a really good year for field hockey and I hope next year the seventh- and sixth-graders will take control and win more games and push themselves further.”
