In the upcoming production of “Once Upon This Island Jr.” at Watertown Middle School, the island gods will be played by (from left) Lucas Nitschke (Papa Ge), Adrina D’Arrigo (Agwe), Emma Griffith (Erzulie), and Casey Master (Asaka).

Watertown Middle School is presenting its annual school play, “Once on This Island Jr.” on Thursday, March 28, and Friday, March 29. The show will begin at 7 p.m.

The play is being produced by the school’s eighth-grade students. The show is run by music and drama teacher Abby Casey and is student directed by Victoria Riley, Carina Delorio, Alyce Judge, Brianna Hume, and Elizabeth McGrath.

“We help create what happens on stage during the show,” Carina said. “We help the actors backstage, and keep everything in check.”

“Once on this Island Jr.” premiered at WMS 10 years ago, as the first musical produced by Ms. Casey. She brought the show back to make it even better than before!

The story follows a young girl named Ti moune who lives on the poor side of an island divided in two, the rich and the peasant.

Ti moune is a very bubbly, happy, lovable peasant girl that we get to watch grow up on stage. As she is sent on a journey by four gods, she eventually falls in love with Daniel, a man from the wealthy side of the island.

The audience embarks on the adventure of their forbidden romance and continues to fall in love with the characters and the story of their love.

“It is ‘The Little Mermaid’ but set in the Greater Antilles,” Carina explained.

The show will be staged in the WMS auditorium at 7 p.m. Tickets for adults are $10, but $5 for students and seniors.
