Any Watertown Middle School student can try out for a part in “Once on This Island” on Monday, Oct. 29, or Thursday, Nov. 1

A picture of the 2009 Watertown Middle School cast of “Once on This Island” hangs in director Abigail Casey’s classroom.

This year’s Watertown Middle School musical will be “Once on This Island.”

“It is the story of Romeo and Juliet told in the Caribbean,” said Abigail Casey, the musical theater director and Watertown Middle School’s music and choir teacher.

“2019, marks my 10th year of doing musicals at WMS, and in 2009 we did ‘Once on This Island,’ ” said Mrs. Casey.

The main role is an orphan girl named Ti Moune, who tries to prove the power of love is stronger than death. Other characters include the gods/goddesses of love, water, earth, and death. Any of these roles could be you, anyone of any gender or race.

Mark your calendar for the auditions, Monday, Oct. 29, and Thursday, Nov. 1. The cast list will be posted Friday, Nov. 2.

The actors aren’t the only people that make up the school play, WMS has a production crew made up of students! This core of this year’s production team is made up of five dedicated and hard-working students, according to Mrs. Casey. These students are responsible for directing and overall helping students perform their best.

Some musicals that have been done at WMS in the past were “Once on This Island,” “Wizard of Oz,” “Lion King,” “Peter Pan,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Into the Woods,” “Once upon a Mattress,” and “Fiddler on the Roof.” Some musicals Mrs. Casey would like to do in the future are “Hairspray,” “Matilda,” “Aladdin,” and “Beauty and the Beast.”

When asked what she liked best about directing the school’s musicals, Mrs. Casey answered: “Musical theater brings a combination of magic and real life right in front of your eyes.

“It’s unpredictable, anything can happen during a performance.”

So get hyped for this upcoming musical, it will be one you will not forget!
