Splash of Flavor 2015: Banana Chocolate Chip Pancakes at Deluxe Town Diner

CATHERINE H., Watertown Splash staff

It’s one of those chilly, fall days. Waking up is hard, and there is nothing appealing in the fridge to eat. Where is the best place to spend the morning? The Deluxe Town Diner in Watertown. The building is cozy, in the style of a cafe from the 1950s.

“Good morning! I’ll be your server today. How are you folks doing?” says a friendly voice upon entering the restaurant. Each booth has comfortable seats, which is calming, especially when soft jazz is playing in the background. Not long after the menus are handed out, a waiter comes up to the table and pours steaming, black coffee into mugs.

Ordering breakfast? The Town Diner special Deluxe Flapjacks is the best thing on the menu. Two of them, actually — filled with bananas and chocolate chips — for only $6.75. So delicious, heads turn in anticipation when any person walks by the table holding plates!

The pancakes, which are the size of a Frisbee, come with a dab of warm, half-melted butter in the middle of the stack. Maple syrup is already at the table. Each bite is fluffy, and has a faint taste of cream.

There is not another pancake in the world that has this unique flavor. They are light, but filling enough to get anyone through the day. The fruity flavor comes from the fresh bananas, a sweet twist from the melting chocolate chips. The pancakes are not at all grainy, but smooth and go down nicely with a gulp of milk.

Sooner or later, the pancakes will fill the stomach enough for the waiter to provide a container so extras can be eaten for lunch, or even dinner.

After a hearty “goodbye,” guests leave the diner feeling full and happy. A breakfast at the Diner does not seem right without having their famous banana-and-chocolate-chip-filled Deluxe Flapjacks.
