There will soon be a new class president and student council at Watertown Middle School, as the seventh-grade students have run against each other in the school elections.

The election was held Monday, June 15, and the winners will be announced Friday, June 19. Watertown Middle School elections back

Any seventh-grade student can run, but there are things that can make running a little difficult, such as needing good attendance, good academic standing, and good grades. Candidates also need to get signatures from students and teachers.

The WMS student council has many positions:

* President — Runs the meetings and is the highest position;

* Vice president — Helps out and fills in when the president isn’t there;

* Treasurer — Deals with the money;

* Secretary — Helps organize meetings;

* E-Board — Works with members of the council and helps contribute ideas and make decisions. Watertown Middle School elections Bri

Members of the student council help plan dances and fund-raisers, like the Pennies for Patients drive. They also volunteer with other school groups and in the community.

According to Elizabeth Donnellan, who is the faculty adviser, to be a good candidate students have to be willing to put themselves out there, be a good listener, be comfortable talking to everyone, contribute to other members’ and students’ ideas, and they need to be organized and good time managers.

Ms. Donnellan explained that “being in the council is like being a team captain of a sports team.” Watertown Middle School elections Abe Lincoln

Along with getting signatures from students and teachers, candidates had to write a speech about why they would be a good choice, and read it in front of the sixth- and seventh-graders and teachers.

During the week of June 8, candidates put up posters and prepared speeches. Candidates had a limit of five campaign posters, which Ms. Donnellan had to approve, and they were advised not to exceed a $15 budget.

For students who don’t have time to run or are afraid of speaking in front of large groups, but who have ideas and want to contribute to the school and student council, there is Leadership, a fifth-period enrichment class. In Leadership, students work with members of the student council and plan events and fund-raisers.
